Battle at the Bell 3v3 Tournament

Eric, Shane and Manny formed a team to compete in the Battle of the Bell 3v3 Tournament.  We started at Pulaski Park at noon, hung around a couple hours while the girls games got underway and then got rained out.  The games were transferred to Beekman Gym and the boys matches began about 3:30pm amid hot humid conditions and wet slippery floors. The boys started slow and it seemed like a blowout was in the making as the Westmoreland Swim team aggressively drove the lane for layups.  After being slapped alongside the head they rallied, losing by 3 points.  The 2nd game they defeated a much heralded Utica D-Squad by making their outside shots and taking advantage of size mismatches inside.  The 3rd game vs Rome Select followed a similar strategy by making shots and posting up Dale and Drew when possible. The 4th game vs Pushovers got a little chippy as Shane got pushed a few times and retaliated by shoving the player to the floor.  An initial ejection got down graded and the game got cleaned up and  continued as the boys squeezed out another win.  Finally they ran out of energy and lost to swim team again and were eliminated from the tournament.  A good showing and fun basketball.

Basketball Hall of Fame

Eric invited his buddy Manny to join his end-of-school-year weekend; visiting RambleWild Ropes Course and the Basketball Hall of Fame.  The boys read through the circle of champions, compared their height, wingspan and vertical leap versus NBA players.  They participated in a virtual reality game, dunked on short baskets and shot from the ground floor court.

The last time we visited the HOF was October 2006 and Eric was 3.  I told Eric we should visit again when he is 23.

Battle for the 315 AAU Tournament

2016-05-015

Rome Select played in the Battle for the 315 tournament.  Their 1st game (9am game) was vs MV Elite and  it was an ugly game.  Rome Select trailed throughout the game and managed to put in two offensive rebounds to win 22-19.

They played Elite Performers at 11am and jumped out to an early lead – I think it was close to 20 points at one point.  In the 2nd half Elite Performers started a full court press and ran off 12 points vs the Rome Select bench (Eric included).  Re-inserting the starters calmed the waters and the final margin of win was ~10 points.

Sunday morning Rome Select played the MV- Elite (Frankfort version) who won the Pool B in the cross over game winning by 25 points.

Rome Select ended up playing Elite Performers in the championship game, but they added a couple of additional players for the championship.  Elite Performers jumped out to a 10 point lead, Rome Select tied it before half and then Elite Performers ran off a 10 point lead right before half.  That was the story in the 2nd half.  Rome Select made a run cut the lead to 10 and then Elite Performers would counter and run it back up.  The final margin of victory was in the teens. Overall a good weekend, but I think everyone walked away disappointed because they lost that last game.  On to Saratoga and the Adidas Hoop Summit.

Eric played good defense, making a couple of steals; he rebounded well.  His scoring is limited.  He had one nice pick and pop and a couple of opportunities in the lane, but this is one area he is working to improve.

Coach Parsons kept 14 boys and had two platoons.  Eric largely played on the 2nd group with Luke, Michael, Jon, Ethan and Ryan. The team was pretty successful with wins over Clinton, Frankfort, Utica Academy of Science, Canastota, Hamilton and Sherburne-Earlville.

Eric had basketball camp or practice day during the school break; 3 days of Mohawk Valley Elite camp 9am-1pm; Ryan’s birthday party at Accelerate Sports Facility, where they played dodgeball, basketball and kick ball, and then practice with the Rome Select AAU team Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Eric wished to play more basketball and asked to participate in AAU.  We were aware of four AAU teams: two teams in Rome, a West Canada Valley team and a new organization, Mohawk Valley Elite, based out of the Accelerate facility.  We decided to try out for each team in turn as tryouts were held until he was able to stick with a team.  Eric tried out for the Rome Select team and made the roster of the B team.  After a couple of weeks he was moved up the A team,  playing on the same team as Dylan and Shane.  The AAU league will be good for him, they are pushing him to be more aggressive and shoot more which is good as he has a tendency to pass or wait for the “just right” shot.  Modified (school) ball finishes up this week with three straight games Wed – Fri and Eric’s 1st AAU tournament is being held this weekend.

7th Grade Modified Basketball vs Utica Academy of Science

Eric tried out for the 7th grade basketball team along with 30 other boys.  Coach Scott Parsons kept 14 boys and created two 7 man teams for their competitions.  Dylan, Shane and Dennis form the core of the ‘A’ team with Luke, Michael and Eric the core of the ‘B’ team.  After upsetting Frankfort, they beat Sherburne badly.  Sherburne led in Q1, but had a disabled point guard and their B team was unable to score while HP ran up the score for the remaining three quarters.

Snow conditions forced re-scheduling of Tuesday’s game vs Canastota.  Thursday night the Utica Academy of Science brought a good 8th grade team.  UCS had a very good point guard on their A team while their B team featured an extremely tall center (#12) and a good forward (#15).  HPMS eked out a close win to push their record to 3-0.

Car Repair Weekend

Our weekend was filled with basketball and car repair issues. The 7th grade team had their 1st game on Friday after school and pulled off a stunning upset. Frankfort has beaten HP every game for the last 3-4 years. In fact, they have rarely lost to anybody. They have a different philosophy, usually only putting 8 kids on a team so they have no “A” team and “B” team where all the other schools usually take more kids and have a “B” team. This is the same group who, this past summer, did a 5 minute time killing 3 man weave (there was no shot clock at that level) to ensure a victory. Anyway, so you get there is some history, getting the win very sweet. Saturday’s game was against Sherbourne and we soundly defeated them, even though at the end our coach had the boys dial it back, don’t pressure the ball etc. So it’s been a good start to the season and we shall see how long it continues. Eric is also playing in an AAU team out of Rome, so they had their first practice Sunday. It will be good for him to play with other guys and get different coaching.

Eric got to ski some on Saturday. There may not be much more skiing until we get more snow. Saturday night Jim and I went out to eat with Helmers and to a concert at the Nelson Odeon featuring Dirty Bourbon River Band. The music was different – described as Dixie Land gypsy folk – very up tempo and bouncy but kind of raw. It was good but we were tired and Eric was home alone so we didn’t stay for the second set.

Skip came over for dinner last night to plan canoe trips and to watch the SU game. He is scheduled to have his knee replaced. He says he can’t do anything, and is putting weight back on. He says he will probably try to go to rehab after surgery rather than come right home. Kathryn is house-bound, as we continue to have major car troubles with both cars are in the shop. The Subaru dashboard light problem may be related to the transmission (as the lights would come on when going uphill over 50MPH).  The Volvo has been at Ballister’s for close to a month as we debated the parts and method for replacing the gas filler tube. Being a 1991 Volvo, getting parts (in this case the pipe that goes into the gas tank) and then having someone figure out how to get them in, is an issue. But with some outside consultation, they got it done. Then yesterday, on his way home from basketball he finds he has no liquid in his radiator. Hopefully that is patched up now, but a major repair and/or new car is likely in our future.
