Eric, Shane and Manny formed a team to compete in the Battle of the Bell 3v3 Tournament. We started at Pulaski Park at noon, hung around a couple hours while the girls games got underway and then got rained out. The games were transferred to Beekman Gym and the boys matches began about 3:30pm amid hot humid conditions and wet slippery floors. The boys started slow and it seemed like a blowout was in the making as the Westmoreland Swim team aggressively drove the lane for layups. After being slapped alongside the head they rallied, losing by 3 points. The 2nd game they defeated a much heralded Utica D-Squad by making their outside shots and taking advantage of size mismatches inside. The 3rd game vs Rome Select followed a similar strategy by making shots and posting up Dale and Drew when possible. The 4th game vs Pushovers got a little chippy as Shane got pushed a few times and retaliated by shoving the player to the floor. An initial ejection got down graded and the game got cleaned up and continued as the boys squeezed out another win. Finally they ran out of energy and lost to swim team again and were eliminated from the tournament. A good showing and fun basketball.

Basketball Hall of Fame
Eric invited his buddy Manny to join his end-of-school-year weekend; visiting RambleWild Ropes Course and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The boys read through the circle of champions, compared their height, wingspan and vertical leap versus NBA players. They participated in a virtual reality game, dunked on short baskets and shot from the ground floor court.
The last time we visited the HOF was October 2006 and Eric was 3. I told Eric we should visit again when he is 23.
RambleWild Ropes Course
Every year, at the conclusion of the school year, we try to come up with something fun to celebrate. In past years it has been camping trips at Soft Maple or our trip out west. This year Eric didn’t want to go camping. Kathryn discovered a large ropes course north of Pittsfield MA that looked fun. Eric invited his buddy Manny to join his end-of-school-year weekend; visiting RambleWild Ropes Course and the Basketball Hall of Fame.
The group donned their gear and took a short introductory lesson from a guide before launching themselves from The Hub. The Hub was a central platform from which eight different courses originated- 2 easy yellows, 2 moderate greens, two blues (which the guide said were a big jump up in difficulty), a black diamond and a double black diamond.
Below Manny takes his 1st apprehensive step.
AAU Adidas Summit
Rome Select won their 3 play-in games and final championship game by an average of 20 points. Everyone got plenty of playing time.
The team received medals for finishing in 1st place.
The #1 7th Grade Boys team.
Coach Dell offers final words as the season concludes.
Battle for the 315 AAU Tournament
Rome Select played in the Battle for the 315 tournament. Their 1st game (9am game) was vs MV Elite and it was an ugly game. Rome Select trailed throughout the game and managed to put in two offensive rebounds to win 22-19.
They played Elite Performers at 11am and jumped out to an early lead – I think it was close to 20 points at one point. In the 2nd half Elite Performers started a full court press and ran off 12 points vs the Rome Select bench (Eric included). Re-inserting the starters calmed the waters and the final margin of win was ~10 points.
Sunday morning Rome Select played the MV- Elite (Frankfort version) who won the Pool B in the cross over game winning by 25 points.
Rome Select ended up playing Elite Performers in the championship game, but they added a couple of additional players for the championship. Elite Performers jumped out to a 10 point lead, Rome Select tied it before half and then Elite Performers ran off a 10 point lead right before half. That was the story in the 2nd half. Rome Select made a run cut the lead to 10 and then Elite Performers would counter and run it back up. The final margin of victory was in the teens. Overall a good weekend, but I think everyone walked away disappointed because they lost that last game. On to Saratoga and the Adidas Hoop Summit.
Daniel Barden Mudfest 2016
Kathryn once again organized a team for the 4th Annual Daniel Barden Mudfest including Eric, Stone and 4 friends: Hannah, Oliva, Mackenzie and Jessica. This year was the 4th annual Mudfest. In 2013 Eric and Trevor ran the kids course and Kathryn ran with Beth. In 2014 it was cold and rainy; Eric did not compete but Kathryn was joined by Beth and Skip. In 2015 Kathryn was joined by Eric and Stone.
U15 AYSO vs Oneida
The first game was Sunday the 24th at 1 o’clock against Oneida at Betsinger Field 524 Betsinger Rd. Sherrill, N.Y. 13461. Since it is the start of vacation week from school a few players could not make the game. There will be no scheduled practices for AYSO, mainly due to the fact that a lot of the kids, if not all, are playing modified sports.
The team was primarily girls with 4 boys. They lost 9-0 showing a lack of playing with one another, passes lacking pace and a desire to dribble the ball into the goal rather than shooting from the box. But the kids had fun and played better in the 2nd half allowing only one goal in the 2nd half.

Eric played good defense, making a couple of steals; he rebounded well. His scoring is limited. He had one nice pick and pop and a couple of opportunities in the lane, but this is one area he is working to improve.

April Fools
We just finished our traditional backwards April Fools Dinner- dressed up crazy, eat dessert 1st, use kitchen utensils for bowls and silverware. We had ice cream sundaes followed by bacon and eggs. Eric got me with the old ‘sugar in the salt shaker with the loose top’ trick.
This was in retaliation for the 200 ‘googly eyes’ we deployed this morning. Everything he touched had googly eyes: his bedroom door, every light switch, toothbrush, hairbrush, cereal bowl, cereal, sneakers, etc, etc, etc. Well played even if I say so myself….
Orlando: Universal Studios and Rope Course
Kathryn, Eric, went to Orlando for a 4 day vacation 3/11 through 3/15, with friends Margaret and Harrisen. We had a 3 day pass to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure. We took one day off in between and went to do a ropes course in Kissimmee, which gave us a good break from the theme-park stuff. The parks were not very crowded on Friday and we found that by going in the “single rider” line (your group gets split up to fill in empty seats) we were able to avoid having any wait at all, although Harrisen objected somewhat as he is fussy about sitting next to strangers. The boys got along and Margaret and I got along so it was good. Saturday we got the express pass, which again made it so we had no waiting. Monday was busier but even then we had 15 minutes or less of a wait in the “single rider” line. So we did the rides a lot. We got really good at the “Men in Black” ride which involves shooting aliens (the boys each had a high score of over 300,000). We did the Simpsons ride so many times we could say the script with the characters (Maggie: “Dad, I’m scared” Homer: “Don’t worry honey, it’s an amusement park; they aren’t going to kill you as long as you have a dime left in your pocket” Psychopath Bob “You’re going to die!” Homer: “You sound just like my doctor!”) Our hotel was quite nice and within walking distance of the park, so we were able to be on our own time schedule and not have to wait for a shuttle. All in all, a very good trip. Limited pictures to share, as you can’t take pictures on the ride, and no one wanted to pay $25 for the picture taken by the park on each ride.
